For well over two centuries, the Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket has been an iconic product in Canada and around the world. Hudson’s Bay Company has commissioned these fine English-made woolen blankets since 1780, many becoming heirlooms that are passed on from one generation to the next. The points, or small black bars on the side of the blanket, were utilized during the fur trade as an indication of size - a measure that continues to this day.
Solid red blankets first appeared in the 18th century. Red was preferred by the coast and interior Salish First Nations in the Pacific northwest. One of the standard colours after the multistripe, the scarlet blanket is unique in that it is actually woven as a white blanket and is over-dyed afterwards.
