For well over two centuries, the Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket has been an iconic product in Canada and around the world. Hudson’s Bay Company has commissioned these fine English-made woolen blankets since 1780, many becoming heirlooms that are passed on from one generation to the next. The points, or small black bars on the side of the blanket, were utilized during the fur trade as an indication of size - a measure that continues to this day.
When Hudson’s Bay point blankets became a regular trade good in 1780, the standard white colour way was one of the original patterns available (along with red, green and blue). It was one of the most popular colour ways with the Indigenous populations - as well as fur traders - during the fur trade era due to its camouflaging capabilities during the winter months.
